love the drive but it does run hot when it was on top of another drive. Runs cooler when by itself.

I've been using G-Tech Drives for the last 6 years, and this is the first drive I've brought since buying my first one as a replacement to my G-Drive mini.
6 years of day to day use and only now am I buying a replacement drive which is a testament to G-Tech's amazing performance and durability. You are
buying into a reliable brand. The G-Drive mobile is easy to set up: just plug it in and get to work. Go out and get one and see the difference.

1.0 out of 5 stars Didn't even last one day, December 3, 2011
This review is from: G-Technology G-DRIVE mobile 750 GB 5400RPM USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive with Firewire 400 Firewire 800 Interfaces 0G01961 (Personal Computers)
Bought this product for use as a backup drive for my iMac's time machine. Plugged it in, easy setup, time machine ran a successful backup but the next morning my mac wouldn't recognize the external hard drive. I tried both the firewire and USB connections in several different ports all with no luck. The computer physically recognizes a drive is plugged in, and the power light on the drive comes on when plugged in so I suspect the cables and connection are all fine. I then tried the drive on my laptop, and it was not recognized by that computer either. The troubleshooting page on G Tech's website was somewhat helpful but did not solve the problem so now my only option is to return it.

3.0 out of 5 stars WD admits there is a firewire "technical limitation.", March 27, 2009
This review is from: Western Digital My Book Studio II - 2 TB (2 x 1 TB) USB 2.0/FireWire 800/400/eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
I have been using the WD Studio II 2TB on my 2008 iMac OSX 10.5.6 for two weeks. Connection: firewire 800. Today, it did not mount when I booted the computer.
Checked the WD Website Knowledge Base.

Discovered two things:

1. Knowledge Base Answer 1697: "This issue is caused by the external hard drive's built in auto on/off functionality not correctly receiving a command from the computer system to wake from a power saver mode."

Why does the auto on/off functionality not correctly receive the command from the computer system? WD goes on to suggest installing their WD Drive Manager.
Well, WD Drive Manager is already installed, how else could a user have arrived at this impasse to begin with?
And then they suggest to dismount the drive. How do you dismount an unmounted drive?

2. Knowledge Base Answer 1680: "This is an technical limitation between the FireWire interfaces on the Macintosh computer and the external hard... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Not best for Intel Macs, April 28, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Western Digital My Book Studio II - 2 TB (2 x 1 TB) USB 2.0/FireWire 800/400/eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
I purchased this drive to go along with my intel mac. I was previously a happy lacie owner, but since WD came in at such a great price and was listed as great with macs, I went for it.

What a mistake. For the first month, it worked well... a bit slower than my lacie, but still worked. Then, all of the sudden, it began to dismount itself from my computer. I am currently using Lightroom to edit my work, and when the drive would fail, Lightroom would loose the catalog. When you have 500+ images to edit and the drive dismounts every 45 minutes, this can become a huge issue.

So, I did some further research and found out that several other intel mac users are having the same issue with this product. This is very frustrating as it is advertised 'for your mac'. Most of the other posters mentioned that the drive worked well for about a month and then started having issues.

I called WD, and their customer service department was actually very helpful... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars high performance, 5 year warranty, self-rebuilding raid mirror, June 23, 2008
This review is from: Western Digital My Book Studio II - 2 TB (2 x 1 TB) USB 2.0/FireWire 800/400/eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
If you want the best performance, you would want to use it as eSATA. This would mean a cardbus or expresscard eSATA adaptor on a laptop, for example. But here is the one star that I have taken off: at this price, it still does not come with an eSATA cable! It has cables for USB and the 1394, but no eSATA. I have not had the chance to test it in eSATA because of the cable. The USB2 speed is good enough for my archival application. I've also read around and eSATA is not faster than USB2 by much in real life (maybe 25MB/s vs 30MB/s).

The 5 year warranty is industry standard and is reassuring. And by the time it's up, you will want a larger storage anyway. :P But you must keep in mind that that if the controller in the enclosure dies, your whole array dies. Hopefully the controller didn't write bogus information into your harddrives and then hopefully WD will be able to ship you a new enclosure and you can recover that way. (This is the one weakness of having RAID 1 as the... Read more

It does not matter that the internal HDD is a 5400rpm WD Scorpio Blue. (There is no such thing as a 5600rpm WD Scorpio Blue.)

The Firewire 800 interface can only handle an absolute maximum throughput of 98 MB/s (786 Mbit/s). USB 2.0 can only do 60 MB/s (480 Mbit/s).

The h2benchw 3.12 Max Read Throughput for the Western Digital WD Scorpio Blue WD10JPVT 1TB 5400rpm is 114.4 MB/s (915.2 Mbits/s).

Hence, the internal HDD is faster than the interfaces. If you need/want external storage with higher throughput you will have to go to USB 3.0, eSATA, or Thunderbolt; with SSD and/or RAID disks.

I really like it. It comes with 2 cables, a usb, and a firewire 800 cable. the software included is okay but won't do much more than what "disk utility" can do on your mac. you can erase it using disk utility and add a password option (this works with osx 10.7 and above). i've been using with time machine on a macbook air and macbook pro and it works great. It feels like it is very high quality and very dense and sturdy. if you want to travel light this may be a little on the heavy side. overall, i would recommend it, especially if you are looking for something that looks good next to your mac. there are other drives out there that can do the same thing for less, but for me, i like something that looks good next to my macbook pro.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, September 23, 2011
This review is from: Western Digital My Passport Studio 1 TB FireWire 800 External Hard Drive WDBK8A0010BBK-NESN (Personal Computers)
Looks great, nice and small for transporting. Did a 145GB time machine backup in under 30 mins!

Wow, just awesome. Works great for MBP.

This is a MAC formatted drive and it's features are geared toward OSX/Mac. I don't think it would work well with Windows. Double check specs before ordering for PC use.

The metal and black totally compliments the MBP color too.
